Top five trends that defined strategic communications in 2024

December 3, 2024

We chatted to Michael Rubenstein our Head of Africa at Aprio Group about communications trends on the continent.  We discovered that these are not too different to trends in other parts of the world.

Africa’s communication landscape has undergone a remarkable transformation, mostly driven by advancements in technology and shifting consumer expectations.

This article looks at AI-powered personalisation and the dominance of video content, and how these trends shaped the way brands communicated with their audiences throughout the year. Here are our top five trends that defined strategic communication in Africa in 2024.

  1. Generative AI transformed communication

Generative AI played a pivotal role in reshaping communication strategies across Africa in 2024. Businesses widely adopted AI tools to automate customer interactions, resulting in more efficient operations and highly personalised experiences. By analysing vast amounts of data, AI-enabled brands to tailor messages that resonated with individual preferences, creating more meaningful connections.

Michael Rubenstein, Head of Africa at the Aprio Group says, “AI has revolutionised the communications sector this year. AI offers communicators the opportunity to craft messages that resonate and connect with stakeholders. While leveraging AI can enhance efficiencies, it is critical to maintain authenticity and ensure that the brand’s unique voice is not lost in the process.”

  1. Conversational marketing gained momentum

Throughout 2024, conversational marketing moved beyond traditional chatbots, with businesses adopting advanced AI-driven tools for real-time customer engagement. These interactions allowed brands to gather valuable insights, offer immediate support, and foster stronger relationships with their audiences.

“Real-time conversations became the cornerstone of customer engagement in 2024,” explained Rubenstein. “Customers expected immediate responses and personalisation, and businesses that delivered this saw stronger connections with their audiences.”

Additionally, conversational marketing proved to be a game-changer, enhancing the way businesses interacted meaningfully with their customers.

  1. Data-driven insights shaped communication strategies

2024 also saw the rise of data-driven insights as a core element of communication strategies. By relying on AI-enhanced analytics, businesses were able to understand audience behaviours, track campaign effectiveness, and make more informed decisions. This data-driven approach has allowed for more precise and effective communication.

“Data became the driving force behind successful communication campaigns in 2024,” says Rubenstein. “Brands that harnessed data were able to target their messaging with pinpoint accuracy, ensuring maximum impact.”

Data analytics played a crucial role in helping businesses adapt quickly to changing market conditions and audience preferences.

  1. Omnichannel communication became the standard

As consumers increasingly expected seamless interactions across multiple platforms, 2024 saw the rise of omnichannel communication as the new standard. Whether through social media, email, or messaging apps, brands invested in ensuring consistent messaging across all channels, meeting customers wherever they were.

“The demand for omnichannel communication grew significantly in 2024,” adds Rubenstein. “Brands that offered a smooth, consistent experience across platforms were able to build stronger customer loyalty.”

  1. Video content dominated the digital landscape

Short-form video content continued its dominance in 2024, particularly on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. African consumers increasingly engaged with video content, and brands that embraced this trend were able to capture attention with creative, visually engaging stories. Video grew as a powerful tool for storytelling and brand promotion throughout the year.

“Video content was the most effective way to engage audiences in 2024 – especially for consumer-facing brands. It allowed them to tell their stories in an immediate and captivating way. It remained a key strategy for brands seeking to stand out in a crowded digital space.”

Reflecting on 2024

As 2024 unfolded, these communication trends became central to how businesses engaged with their audiences. The focus on AI, real-time interaction, data-driven decision-making, omnichannel strategies, and video content certainly stood out among the top communication strategies in 2024.

“We saw that brands which embraced these trends were able to navigate the changing landscape and connect with their audiences in more meaningful ways.  The evolution of communication this year has set the stage for future digital innovations, with businesses that were early adopters being well-positioned for continued success in the years to come,” concluded Rubenstein.
